Welcome to our second Summer Band Session, Wednesday July 8th! One of the amazing things about the internet is that it has so many wonderful things to offer. It has bad things too, so we need to be careful about what we are reading online. But there is so much great stuff! On Monday I introduced you to "Fats" Waller and Louis Armstrong, two of the greatest musicians in our country's history. We began learning the song Ain't Misbehavin. Here is our plan today! 1) Everyone gets to say "hi" in the Zoom meeting! Is there anything you'd like to share with us? 2) Very brief review of norms and brief review of Monday. 3) As part of that review we'll listen to Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong playing Ain't Misbehavin This is Fats Waller playing Ain't Misbehavin This is Louis Armstrong playing Ain't Misbehavin Listening to the above will take around 5 minutes or so. 4) Everyone gets to play what they have so fa...

Summer Band 1!

Welcome to our first Summer Band Session! Our focus this summer is African American Music and Improvisation in a Concert Band! We are starting with a song that is new to us, written by a great American composer who lived not far from us, in New York City. His name was "Fats" Waller, and the song we are going to be starting with is Ain't Misbehavin! Here is our plan today! 1) Everyone gets to say "hi" in the Zoom meeting! Is there anything you'd like to share with us? What's one fun thing you have done or are planning to do this summer? (10-15 minutes) 2) Norms for summer band (real names on the screen only, be kind, take turns, try to come to band prepared). Each of us will get a chance to propose one norm and discuss it. 3) Mr. A will talk briefly about Black American Music and why it is so important and central to American culture. We'll learn a little about New Orleans and New York City and the role of these cities in the development o...
