Summer Band 1!

Welcome to our first Summer Band Session!

Our focus this summer is African American Music and Improvisation in a Concert Band!

We are starting with a song that is new to us, written by a great American composer who lived not far from us, in New York City. His name was "Fats" Waller, and the song we are going to be starting with is Ain't Misbehavin!

Here is our plan today!

1) Everyone gets to say "hi" in the Zoom meeting! Is there anything you'd like to share with us? What's one fun thing you have done or are planning to do this summer? (10-15 minutes)

2) Norms for summer band (real names on the screen only, be kind, take turns, try to come to band prepared). Each of us will get a chance to propose one norm and discuss it.

3) Mr. A will talk briefly about Black American Music and why it is so important and central to American culture. We'll learn a little about New Orleans and New York City and the role of these cities in the development of American Music.  (5 minutes or so)

4) We're going to hear some of Fats Waller's music:

This is Fats Waller playing Ain't Misbehavin

This is Louis Armstrong playing Ain't Misbehavin

Listening to the above will take around 5 minutes or so.

5) Please log into classroom. In classroom you will find several posts. The very first post is the score and music for Ain't Misbehavin. There are parts for every instrument.  We are going to work on learning the melody together today, taking turns on a volunteer basis. If you don't want to play it before getting a chance to practice it this week that is fine! We will take turns and work on the melody. This will take up the bulk of today's meeting (around 20 minutes or so)

6) We are going to try to play "Teacher vs. Class" over zoom where we echo sing tonic, dominant, and subdominant patterns (5 minutes)

7) We are going to try creating our own tonic patters today using our instrument. Each person needs to create one pattern. We will go around the Zoom meeting and take turns.

8) Mr. Akter is going to demonstrate how a "Play Along" recording works. Our only assignment is going to be learning the melody to Ain't Misbehavin this week. (3 minutes or so)

10) That's a lot of items for our first session! Your practice assignment is to work on the melody to Ain't Misbehavin.

Have an AMAZING week.
